Haha.. Got that after doing some survey for this I-Mode thing for starhub and the questions asked were like "How many times did u talk about mobile phones the past month?" and "How many times were Starhub mentioned" and "Out of this, how many positively?" or something like that.. WHERE'S THE RELEVANCE??? Totally did not see that coming hahaa thought it was just a SURVEY... But... I'm still a loyal s-hubber (in case there are any corporate spies out there reading this) and I lurrrve the outgoing talktime rollover system in powerchat.. And am i really like Stephen hawking? *feels proud* :D I'm DIGRESSING.

I was gonna talk about how these quiz things are smart cheaters. They give you results that would make you feel "Oh my! That is SO me! Amazing!" and forget that a billion other people who did the test probably got that same description and felt it is SO them too. The thing is, these quiz setters, well, they are really clever in the sense that they KNOW what people usually feel about themselves, or WANT TO feel about themselves and all they have to do is to put it into words.

We did this test in my 2nd psych tutorial where we were supposed to go up to the class computer 1 by 1 and fill in an onscreen questionnaire. Then we wait at the side for a while after we were done while our prof click a few buttons for the computer program to assess our answers n churn out our respective result.. After we have read, we go back to our seat and it would another person's turn.

After everyone was done, the Prof claimed that that test is a new one that he just came across and he has yet to figure out whether it is a 'good' test, i.e. reliable and valid (loosely meaning that you can derive some answers from the questions asked, as compared to deriving you are Friendly from how many cups of coffee you like to drink every day, you get the picture?). So he asked us based on the result that we got, how we would grade it from a scale of A to E, where A -Super accurate, reeeally described us 101%, very reliable and E- Lousy. Like 99.999% of the class gave it an A, the rest (3-4 souls) gave a B. No Cs and below..

Prof: Oh ok.. (Walks to the computer and connects it to the projector) So you would say this is an accurate test. (Refers to big screen) Okay let's see, so for example the people who got this description, you feel it is really described you.

Class:(Some heads nodding. Mumbling.)

Prof: How many of you got this?

and WHOOSH the whole class' hands were up.

Class: (Scoffs. Laughs. Whaaat..)

We got conned. So much for 'everyone is unique'.

Prof then explained that besides validity and reliability, another important criteria of a 'good' test is its ability to discriminate. Clearly this test, doesn't have much of that. He went on to say that there are researches done to find out essentially what are the traits/ concerns/ ambitions that everybody has and it's a matter of these quizsetters picking and choosing some of these, shoving them into the person's face and convincing him 'Yup, that's you.' So all those Tickle personality tests and Horoscopes aren't complete boguses, some science did go into it. Just that none of this 'some' would be likely to benefit you much. :D Smart ain't it, however it is they made us feel cheated?

But oh, aren't Tickle tests so fun! (closet fan)
